At Heritage Valley, we recognize College Savings Month in September to emphasize the importance of saving early and saving often when planning for the future. It’s a month dedicated to building college savings awareness.
Back in 2003, the U.S. Congress officially declared September College Savings Month, making a nationwide invitation to dream big for our children’s futures and take steps toward making those dreams a reality. It’s the perfect time to start planning for college costs so your child can chase their academic and life goals without being weighed down by overwhelming debt.
According to The Education Plan®, one of the smartest, most empowering steps you can take is opening and contributing to a 529 education savings account. It’s a tax-advantaged way to prepare for future education expenses — and it can make a real difference in reducing the need for student loans down the road.
There are many ways to open a 529 Plan including PA 529 which gives Pennsylvania residents a state income tax deduction and other benefits. The Pennsylvania 529 College and Career Savings Program provides a smart, tax advantaged way for families to save for education and are sponsored by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Also, Keystone Scholars gives PA babies born after December 31, 2018 a $100 education investment.
A LITTLE TODAY GOES A LONG WAY.
Getting started is simple and Heritage Valley is here to help. You can start by creating a budget that puts aside a small amount each month for college savings. Treat it as a gift to your child’s future. Our savings accounts and share certificates are a great way to start. We also offer an annual scholarship program only for our members. In addition, we offer private student lending where one application covers four years of funds. Because our loan is a line of credit, there is no need to reapply each year, just request a draw each semester for the amount you need.
SEPTEMBER IS COLLEGE SAVINGS MONTH. LET’S MAKE IT COUNT!
This September, commit to setting aside as much as you can toward this important milestone. Even small, consistent contributions can add up to something powerful over time. Give your loved ones the freedom to focus on their education, not their debt.
